After Big Bend we drove north through Guadalupe Mountains National Park in northwestern Texas, and crossed into New Mexico to Carlsbad Caverns. The caverns were breathtaking; their sheer size was overwhelming. It was beyond description. You’ll all have to go there and check them out because words and pictures don’t give you a real feel for the place. We returned to Carlsbad in the evening to watch the bats leave the cave. It was spectacular, seeing hundreds of thousands of Mexican freetail bats swarming like mosquitoes out of the cave. |

We stopped at the International UFO Museum & Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico, which was a major rip-off. If we had paid an admission fee, we'd have demanded a refund, and if we had even a modicum of belief in the existence of UFO's prior to our visit, we had none by the time we left. The displays were little more than enlarged news clippings from the 40’s and a few tacky spaceship mockups. All in all, Roswell was very disappointing. |
