San Antonio

We then headed westward. During the drive through the hills Dan commented that the landscape reminded him of England. If the grass were a little greener, and the cattle were sheep, I'd agree. In San Antonio we visited the Alamo. I had expected to find it after a lengthy drive through desolate countryside (as it is always depicted in the movies) but instead it is right in the heart of downtown San Antonio.

The Alamo, however, is not the most memorable attraction in San Antonio; this distinction belongs to the River Walk. The River Walk consists of miles of shaded brick and cobblestone walkways along the edge of the narrow, shallow and yes, muddy San Antonio River. It is lined with hundreds of restaurants and shops and has several small footbridges arcing over it, making it quite easy to get lost.

We again headed west and as we left the San Antonio area the landscape changed markedly. It reminded me of Maine's blueberry barrens, with the notable exception of the prickly pear cactus that blanket the area. River and creek beds were dry, or nearly so, and even the mighty Pecos River was reduced to little more than a muddy trickle at the point we crossed it.

Just west of the Pecos we came to Langtry, Texas, home of legendary Judge Roy Bean (The Hanging Judge) and named for British actress Lilly Langtry, with whom Judge Bean was quite enamored. The original saloon / courthouse that the Judge used is now a museum of sorts. Legend has it that the Judge wrote to Lilly Langtry to tell her that he’d named a town after her and invite her to visit. She wrote back that she was unable to visit but would like to donate a fountain for the town square. The Judge replied that water was about the only thing they didn’t drink in Langtry. It was another interesting history lesson.
