We arrived in New Orleans on a Sunday afternoon and walked the French Quarter that night. We bought a frozen drink called Voodoo in a spooky old building that used to be a blacksmith's shop, then walked Bourbon Street with our drinks, listening from the street to Jazz, Rock, Blues and Cajun bands. It was quite a spectacle. I can't imagine what it must be like during Mardi Gras since, as Dan said, it was crazy enough on a Sunday night in May! We visited a Voodoo Museum but were quite disappointed. The only thing that caught my attention was the albino python that was behind glass doors. When I looked through the glass I didn’t expect to see a snake, so naturally I jumped about six inches off the floor. We saw an IMAX movie in 3-D (Galapagos Iguanas) and walked for a bit along the Mississippi River on Monday afternoon. Monday evening we visited Harrah's casino, but after losing $20 each, we decided we’d had enough gambling and so made another trip to Bourbon Street to giggle at the sights. Every city has its seedy underbelly, and New Orleans seems to have gone belly up, displaying its seediness with pride. After two days we’d had enough -- it's just too weird for us. |

We drove from New Orleans to Texas on the back roads, going down through Louisiana Bayou country. I was expecting spooky cypress swamps but in reality it was merely flat marshlands with an occasional town thrown in for good measure. We did see a couple of alligators, several turtles and about a gazillion dragonflies, but nothing terribly exciting. |
