After our whirlwind tour of Washington, DC, we headed north and found ourselves in New York City. I thought it would be a pity to pass so near to it and not give Dan a chance to at least see it up close, so we ventured into the city and promptly got lost. It took just four hours to find our way back to Interstate 95, and then only after a rather harrowing trip through Harlem and the Bronx, two places we'd definitely NOT want to live. We drove north to Vermont and spent a night at Lake Champlain on the Vermont / New York border. It was lovely and cool but the lake was almost totally "private" where we were staying, thus we couldn't gain access to its shore (without trespassing, that is). We took a tour of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in the morning and got our free samples (The Full Vermonty is scrumptious), then drove down to Boston and did a walking tour of the city. We were both surprised to find that Fanuiel Hall, the 'Cradle of the American Revolution,' is little more than specialty shops now. Very tacky. There was a $5 per person entrance fee to the Old South Meeting House and the Old State House Building so we only went in one. It's a funky city, though, and we were lucky enough to be there on a day when the streets were filled with performers. The carnival atmosphere was laid-back, but we saw a human statue, and a man playing 'drums' using five gallon pails, pizza pans and various tin pots. |

After taking a spanking at the parking garage -- $31 for three hours parking!! -- ('magine) -- we headed out of the city. It was nearing the time of day when we normally looked for a hotel for the night, but since we were less than 4 hours from home, we decided to go the extra distance and save a hundred dollars. Waterville is much as we left it, except the snow banks are finally gone. Dan's first order of business when we arrived was to make a proper cup of tea. He's suffered more than 11 weeks without a decent tea-fix.....he should be testy by now. (you mean I wasn't already? - Dan) Well folks, this is the end of our journey. We've been eighty days and 18,500 miles together. Thanks again for sharing our adventure with us.
