South Dakota

We went on to South Dakota and visited Mount Rushmore. There was a forest fire nearby (Lead-Deadwood Fire) which filled the air with smoke while we were at Rushmore.

We continued south through the Black Hills and visited the Crazy Horse Monument (which I am ashamed to say I never knew existed). Crazy Horse was an Indian chief who never signed a treaty, never lived on a reservation, and when asked where his lands were now (after the white men had taken them all) pointed over his horse's head and said, "My lands are where my people are buried." They are carving a granite mountain in the likeness of Crazy Horse astride his horse and have been blasting away at the mountain for more than fifty years now.

We also went to Badlands National Park, which took very little time since the only activity seemed to be excruciating days-long hikes and one walk-through fossil exhibit. We gave the hikes a miss, but did take the time to view the fossils.
