Northeast Wyoming

We drove north to Wyoming and discovered that there is a whole lot of nothing in the eastern part of the state. The most exciting part of that leg of our journey was the mile-long freight trains we saw hauling hundreds of identical cars filled with coal (or some other black rock). We even passed through a town called Lost Spring whose sign proudly proclaimed, "Population 4." Apparently they all lived in the one house we saw as we passed by.

We went to Devil's Tower in Northeastern Wyoming, the famous rock where the spaceship landed in the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (and which Dan refers to as the 'potato rock'). I must admit it is more impressive from a distance than up close, but we did discover that it's made of the same lava columns, and originated through the same volcanic disturbances as Sheepeaters Cliffs in Yellowstone (not unusual considering they're both in the same state).
