Colorado

We decided this was a good time to head for Colorado since we all think of it as a snowy place. Once we'd gotten above 10,000 feet, it was indeed much cooler, but the car kept overheating on the endless hills, and the brakes gave us such trouble that we weren't really comfortable.

It seems every hotel room in Denver and Boulder were booked that night so we ended up driving all the way to Estes Park at the edge of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Estes Park is a lovely resort community with tons of overpriced shops, hotels and restaurants. We nearly ran out of gas trying to find a filling station -- the only one we could find didn't have gas pumps (if that makes sense).

We went into Rocky Mountain National Park but the only thing of interest that we might have wanted to see (a waterfall) was only accessible from a road that was closed and as the brakes were a concern, we decided not to drive through the park and risk plummeting off a steep cliff. We drove back to Boulder and had the brakes replaced instead - there's nothing like a good gouging by a mechanic to set the blood stirring.

Like Maine, Colorado has no billboards along the highway to obscure the scenery, a great idea, but we had become quite dependent on those signs during this trip and as a result, we were quite lost in Colorado.
