From Bryce Canyon we drove through Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument. It was another hellishly hot day and the car overheated so we had to drive for several hours without any air conditioning (we're so spoiled). When we reached the eastern side of the park and were able to look back over what we had just driven, the name made a lot of sense, as it did indeed look very much like giant steps up to the sky.
We also went through Capitol Reef National Park, another beautiful park with red rock canyons and a tiny river flowing through it to keep at least a small amount of green things about. Again, the temperatures were so oppressive that we didn't hike at all, but only took a short walk to look at some petroglyphs left by ancient Indians.
We went through Canyonlands National Park, which includes such places as Island in the Sky, Needles, and The Maze (you've seen it on old movies, where the cowboys get lost in the canyons). Part of the road was closed, however, and again it was beastly hot, so we hiked very little (and drank a LOT of water).
