Southern Utah |

We drove from Wyoming down to Salt Lake City, Utah, passing through some beautiful countryside along the way. Salt Lake City is a nice enough city, and still shows signs of the 2002 Winter Olympics having been there, but we weren't terribly impressed with the food, service or signage (we kept getting lost) and so we found our way out and ventured onward. The lake itself seems largely unused. There was a small state park on it (somewhere) but we couldn't find it as the signs were less than adequate and those signs that did exist were conveniently located behind trees and bushes. We drove on down the state and went to several parks in southern Utah instead. First we drove through Red Canyon, which was amazing inasmuch as the red rock started instantly. We rounded a corner and suddenly everything went red -- it stopped just as abruptly on the other side of the canyon. Quite curious. |

| Next came Bryce Canyon, which was more colorful than the Painted Desert in Arizona and had very fanciful looking 'hoodoos,' rock formations that look like a large army when viewed from above. The man for whom the park is named was the first settler to the region and his lasting comment about the canyon was, "It's a hell of a place to lose a cow!" |

| We found a lovely little cabin and rented it for a couple of days to rest and regain our senses. On our 'day off' we decided to take a small hike up to a waterfall in Bryce Canyon. We hiked less than 1.5 miles, but it was at elevations over 8000 feet, and in 107-degree heat, so that one tiny hike was quite enough for both of us. We went back to the cabin and had a nap. |
