We then moved onward to Oregon. The day started in extreme northwestern California after a night on the world's most uncomfortable bed. It was overcast and cold in the morning so we both dressed appropriately, but as we ventured inland it warmed up and by mid-day we were both suffering from the heat. Thank goodness
(again) for air conditioning. We came upon a river that had a natural bridge so we had to stop to check this out. The Bend River enters a lava tube at one point, then exits the other end of the tube some distance away. It was a pleasant sojourn. |
![]() Bend River, Oregon enters a lava tube and disappears underground for a short distance, then bubbles out of the ground again at the end of the tube. |
| We then drove up to Crater Lake National Park in southwestern Oregon. As we neared the park we encountered snow on the roadsides...no longer a novelty. By the time we reached the crater (volcanic, not meteoric) there was snow everywhere...several feet deep in some places -- no more a/c necessary. They say the snow stays until sometime in July! (And I thought Maine winters were bad…silly me.) |

| From Crater Lake we headed toward southern Washington and passed Mount Hood (Oregon’s highest peak) along the way. I was disappointed that we couldn't get any closer to it than we did but it was a spectacle, nonetheless. Another interesting place was a town called Rhododendron, Oregon. Hundreds of wild flower bushes grew along the roadside, so many varieties of pink! Amazing. |
